Naps produce inconsistent results, leaving some people refreshed and others worse than before. The variation is largely explained by which sleep stage a person is in when the nap ends.

Sleep inertia follows waking from deep sleep

Waking from the deepest stage produces a transitional state of grogginess, slowed reaction time and impaired decision-making that can last from several minutes to considerably longer.

This occurs because brain regions do not return to waking function simultaneously, with those responsible for planning and judgement recovering last.

The effect is strongest immediately after waking and clears gradually, which means a nap can impair performance during exactly the period it was meant to help.

Nap length determines which stage is interrupted

A short nap, roughly under twenty minutes, generally stays within light sleep and ends before deep sleep begins, avoiding inertia entirely.

A nap of forty to sixty minutes is likely to be cut short in deep sleep, which produces the worst combination of grogginess and incomplete benefit.

A full cycle of around ninety minutes allows the sleeper to pass through deep sleep and wake from a lighter stage, though it is harder to schedule reliably.

Timing interacts with the circadian rhythm

Alertness dips in the early afternoon in most people, driven by the circadian rhythm rather than by lunch.

A nap taken during that window falls asleep more readily and aligns with a period when performance was going to be poor anyway.

Later naps encounter a rising circadian alerting signal, take longer to initiate and are more likely to interfere with the following night.

Naps borrow from the night's sleep pressure

Sleeping reduces accumulated sleep pressure, and that reduction applies whenever the sleep occurs.

A substantial nap therefore leaves less drive available at bedtime, which lengthens the time taken to fall asleep that evening.

For someone already sleeping poorly at night, regular long naps can sustain the problem while appearing to compensate for it.

What naps do and do not replace

Short naps reliably improve alertness and reaction time over the following hours, which is why they are used operationally in aviation and medicine.

They do not substitute for the functions concentrated in a full night, since the later cycles containing most rapid eye movement sleep are never reached.

A sudden increase in the need to nap, or falling asleep unintentionally during the day, is a reason for clinical assessment.
